BUILDING A POTATO TOWER!
This year (or any planting seasons to come) try growing your potato plants UP! Begin by planting your little potato starts somewhere that you can build a wooden box or some type of walls around. Down at PIE, we are using some super thick PVC style sewer piping for ours! (I convinced a construction site to give us some of their leftover piping last season!)
[I have also built wooden boxes for potatoes in gardens that have a side panel on the bottom front of the box, so potatoes can be harvested without disturbing the potato plant up top.]
Now, as your potato grows upward, add dirt and compost around your plants. Make sure to leave plenty of leaves uncovered, so that your plant still can get sunlight! You can continue to cover up the bottom of the potato plant throughout the growing season... the more plant you cover up, the more potatoes you will harvest in the end! When harvest time arrives, have a friend help you flip over your heavy potato tower. Using this method, you can triple or even quadruple your potatoes harvested per plant!
