FLOWER-N-GARDEN SHOW
Zach and I were asked to host a workshop at the Flower-N-Garden show in the downtown Little Rock convention center... so we chose to talk about 'wicking bucket systems.' We also told our crowd about all the awesome things we got going on and growing down at Plan-It! Earth (as well as what is going on at my other job at Dunbar Garden!) A quick explanation of a 'wicking bucket system' is: a 5 gallon bucket with a water reservoir in the bottom 1/3 of the bucket. A 'drain pi
pe' pours out any excess water (once the reservoir is full) and a 'fill pipe' is used to fill the reservoir from the top. A layer of burlap (or cloth) is used to separate the water reservoir area and where the dirt is. The water is then naturally 'wicked' up by capillary rise action. Wicking buckets are easy to make and very inexpensive as well! They help to reassure you that your plants will survive long hot parts of the year or they can be used to give you peace of mind, knowing your plants won't die while you're on vacation for 10 days or so!
