FRUIT TREES!!!
It was another beautiful day down at Plan-It! Earth ...perfect for some fruit tree planting!
We ended up planting 4 Peach trees, 6 Figs and a Pomegranate tree out on some of the 'new land'! (Thank you Tracy for the donation of Peach trees! Thank you Cindy and Grady for the Pomegranate!)
Justice, Amara, Jack, Kyle, Alaina, Meredith and Zach all came out and lent a hand digging holes and learning about the correct way to remove trees from pots, so as to not hurt the roots. As we dug out the new homes for our trees, we discussed Hugelculture and the need for moisture to be held within the soil for the happiest roots to grow! As we added in compost, we also added some mulch in to help further hold this moisture in with the rest of the dirt. Everyone took turns loosening the soil around each of the tree's roots before covering them up with dirt and compost. Last, we watered them in real well, so the pockets of air around our freshly planted roots wouldn't get 'root rot'. Our final gift to the tree was creating a 'bowl' around it with the tough clay from the bottom of the hole. This clay ring will help to hold water, focusing it into the roots instead of it just draining away elsewhere into the ground.
